Man United vs Wolves LIVE!

Ralf Rangnick fell to his first loss as Manchester United manager after Joao Moutinho's 82nd-minute strike earned Wolves a 1-0 win in the Premier League on Monday.

Outplayed for much of the game, United's players looked like they would survive for a point until Moutinho met a defensive headed clearance with a volley from the edge of the area that rolled inside the post.

This was the toughest test of Rangnick's opening six matches in charge and United couldn't get near Wolves at times at Old Trafford.

There were murmurings of discontent from the home fans, too, with some jeering Rangnick's decision to substitute Mason Greenwood just before the hour. United stayed in seventh place, 22 points off leader Manchester City and four off the top four.

Rangnick, whose previous league opponents included the bottom three of Norwich, Newcastle and Burnley, handed a first start in nearly two years in all competitions for Phil Jones. The former England centre-back has struggled with a longstanding right knee injury and was given a rousing ovation when he made his first clearance of the game.

Jones couldn't mark his return with a clean sheet, though, while Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa preserved his with a diving save to his right to keep out Bruno Fernandes' free kick with one of the last acts of the game.

Fernandes had been the player to come on for Greenwood and, within minutes, struck the crossbar with United's best chance. Cristiano Ronaldo also had a goal for United disallowed for offside.

Manchester United FC 0 - 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers FC

Recap a huge win for Wolves - and more despair for Man United - with our match report.

20:39 , Marc Mayo

Ralf Rangnick has described his reasoning for subbing Mason Greenwood, which earned boos from the Old Trafford faithful.

“It was 0-0” Rangnick explained on Sky Sports. “We had our better moments in the part of the game so we decided to bring on Bruno. He had the big chance to put us 1-0 ahead.

“Mason was good but I had to take somebody off and didn’t want to take one of our [central midfielders] off. So the question was do I take off Edi [Cavani] or Mason. I decided to take off Mason.”

Luke Shaw echoes the sentiment on Phil Jones’ performance.

He tells Sky Sports: "One thing I will say is Phil Jones should be proud of himself. He has been criticised for years, and has gone through a lot, but he is so professional and he has trained hard and he was phenomenal. He was exceptional."

20:22 , Marc Mayo

More from Rangnick, on Phil Jones’ first appearance since January 2020.

He says: "There was no doubt at all regarding his attitude because I saw him training. If you consider hasn't played in two years it was a very good performance."

20:17 , Marc Mayo

Ralf Rangnick has admitted his side were thoroughly subpar in today’s defeat.

He told Sky Sports: "We didn't play well at all, neither individually nor collectively. In the first half, we had big problems to keep them away from our box and from our goal.

"Second half, we changed to a different formation with a back three and we had more control in the second half of the game, had then a spell of 15 minutes where we could have scored, hit the crossbar.

"But the goal that we conceded again showed... We had enough players in the box, but we allowed [Adama] Traore, back to goal, to turn and gain speed and bring in the cross.

"The cross had already been defended by Phil Jones, but again the goal that we conceded was one of too many this season where Moutinho could just shoot completely unmarked with no problems, no pressure at all and therefore we are very disappointed about the result, but also about parts of our performance."

20:09 , Marc Mayo

Jamie Redknapp has slammed Manchester United’s approach to this game, with Ralf Rangnick’s tactics failing to control the midfield.

He told Sky Sports: "We speak about managers coming into the game and he came in with this famed 4-2-2-2 system - it doesn't work.

"When you come here, you have to have the right players, it doesn't matter what system you play. Then he went to a three at the back, today he played 4-4-2 and at the end of it, I think he's making up systems. There was no real identity of how they were trying to play.

"The Watford performance was a real low for Manchester United, but I'm sure the Manchester United fans will have looked today and thought, 'At least we'll look to be exciting going forward', but there was nothing today. They never had control of the game.

"When you watch Manchester City play and all the best teams, they have control in the midfield. United never had any control of that midfield today. Never once have they played passes to each other, they never had an ability to just take the sting out of the game, to get some confidence."

The moment of ‘what might have been’ for United

That defeat ends Ralf Rangnick’s unbeaten start as Manchester United manager.

It also signals six losses in the Premier League for the Red Devils, after 19 games - as many as they suffered in all of last season.

A hell of a result for Wolves

19:33 , Marc Mayo

The winning moment...

19:31 , Marc Mayo

Full time! Man United 0-1 Wolves

19:26 , Marc Mayo

90+6 mins: Fernandes has it over Ronaldo... Save!

Sa with the acrobatics and that’s the whistle!

19:25 , Marc Mayo

90+5 mins: Jones throws himself at a bouncing ball by the D and Silva throws in a needless high foot, that’s a foul and what surely is the last chance...

19:24 , Marc Mayo

90+5 mins: Rashford wins a corner... One last chance?!

19:23 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Sa fumbles a header back across goal but grabs the ball before Cavani leaves a stud on his wrist.

Can’t blame the Uruguayan for going in there but it’s a useful stoppage for Wolves that earns Sa a booking for dragging out.

19:22 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: Chants of “attack, attack, attack” as the hosts win a corner.

Was it from the United fans or away end?

19:21 , Marc Mayo

90+2 mins: Traore and Marcal can’t put together a counter and United are on the ball near the halfway line as they chase a leveller.

19:20 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Five minutes added on. The ball is still by United’s corner flag as they finally win a goal kick.

19:18 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: It’s all Wolves on the ball in the home team’s half as injury time approaches...

19:17 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Podence off for Dendoncker, a defensive change from the visitors after Rashford wastes a move forward for United.

19:15 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: You can only hear the away end before Traore bursts upfield seeking a second, but neither his nor Marcal’s later cross can force an opening.

19:14 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Rangnick responds by throwing young winger Elanga on for Wan-Bissaka, moving Rashford to a semi-right-back.

19:13 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Well, well, well!

Traore’s cross from the right looked overhit and Jones only cleared as far as Moutinho, who took aim from 18 yards and found the corner perfectly.

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Wolves | Joao Moutinho, 82'

19:11 , Marc Mayo

82 mins: Moutinho fires Wolves in front!

19:10 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Rashford looks to work a shot on his right and ends up hesitating and losing possession, prompting a Wolves breakaway which Varane expertly shuts down - winning the ball and then a free-kick.

Silva replaces Jimenez in the next Wolves change.

19:07 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: More fantastic defending from Shaw to prevent Jimenez firing home the opener, sticking out a leg from Marcal’s cross and picking up a knock in the process.

19:05 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Rashford for Sancho in the second United change.

19:04 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: Crossbar!

Saiss hits the bar with his free-kick! A fine effort that just lacked the required dip and it bounces over for a goal kick.

19:04 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: Traore versus Matic is one hell of a pace mismatch and the Serbian commits the cynical foul near the edge of the area - earning a yellow card for his troubles.

19:02 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: Was that United burst the best they’ve got or the start of something special?

18:59 , Marc Mayo

69 mins: Old Trafford finds its voice as United find their range and Ronaldo races in behind to drag a shot across the face of goal and wide.

A classic bit of late drama could be about to unfold in front of the Stretford End...

18:58 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Disallowed!

The flag is up from a Ronaldo header after a free-kick from the right. Replays back up the flag.

18:57 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: Crossbar!

What a chance for Fernandes! Racing onto the ball after a Matic cross from the left and he’s unmarked from 12 yards - he pumps an effort onto the underside of the bar.

18:55 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Trincao, who has rather summed up Wolves’ sense of looking good in attack until the time comes to actually shoot, is taken off for Traore.

18:54 , Marc Mayo

64 mins: Shaw covers really well as Podence’s fine in-swinging cross is headed clear by the left-back with Jimenez ready to power an effort towards goal.

18:52 , Marc Mayo

62 mins: This time it’s Wolves turn to give it away in their own half and Coady has to clear a Wan-Bissaka cross at the near-post.

18:49 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Old Trafford BOO Greenwood’s number going up with the youngster chosen to come off for Bruno Fernandes.

18:48 , Marc Mayo

58 mins: Wolves break forward again and Trincao decides to dummy a shot on goal from a great position in the D. Semedo follows up with a deflected effort.

Why didn’t he shoot? Is being a Barcelona striker not enough reason to actually have a go?

18:46 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: Shaw booked for felling Trincao after the ball had gone.

That’s another one-game ban, missing the game against Aston Villa in a couple of weeks.

18:45 , Marc Mayo

55 mins: Nice little run from Kilman reaches the area before he realised where he was and slipped.

That gives a glimmer of a counter back for the home team, which fizzles into a routine spell of possession.

18:43 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: United keeping the ball better in the early minutes of this half, with 74 per cent of possession - compared to 46 in the first-half.

18:40 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: Greenwood cuts inside a good 30 yards away from goal and obliges at the cries of “shoot” from the Stretford End. His effort is high and quite a bit wide.

18:39 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: Nothing doing from the free-kick.

By the way, that’s a Premier League one-game ban for McTominay, with his fifth yellow card of the season.

18:38 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: Podence wanders forward before running into a bit of a dead end, turning away from goal, and being cleaned out by McTominay.

Yellow card.

18:36 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: Some life from United to start us off as Sancho makes a good run and has his pass into the box cut out.

Second-half! Man United 0-0 Wolves

18:34 , Marc Mayo

Here we go!

No changes from either side at the break.

18:33 , Marc Mayo

No shortage of attacking talent for Rangnick if he looks to his bench; Rashford, Van de Beek, Elanga, Lingard, Fernandes...

Mind you, that’s never been their problem.

18:28 , Marc Mayo

The moment of the first-half, without a doubt.

18:24 , Marc Mayo

Half-time stats check: Four shots to 15 in Wolves’ favour, with one on target to four.

The visitors have held 54 per cent of the ball too, with 85 per cent of their passes finding their man to United’s 80 per cent.

Wolves have also had six corners to United’s zero.

Half-time! Man United 0-0 Wolves

18:19 , Marc Mayo

That just about sums it up for United as Ronaldo slips to allow the ball to run out for a goal kick.

18:18 , Marc Mayo

45+2 mins: United survive the corner and should get the chance to regroup at the break on level terms.

18:17 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: A really neat move through the middle almost sees Trincao set free by Jimenez and Podence, but United temporarily reject their advances.

Semedo then finds himself in down the right and Jones gets a touch to send the cross out for a corner.

Two minutes added on.

18:14 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: Cavani doesn’t tend to score many from outside the box and we discover why as he winds up unmarked from 20 yards, only to slash attempt high and wide.

18:12 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Jimenez battles at the near-post after a fresh move down the left and Matic does enough to disrupt his surge, sticking a foot in and winning the goal kick.

18:11 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: United have faded back with Wolves, after a free-kick is turned away, upping the pressure as the break nears.

18:07 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: Chance!

Wolves break and Ronaldo mystifyingly heads towards his own goal from a loose ball, but picks out Jimenez!

The Mexican has to divert the ball back to Marcal, and the cross finds him in a very offside position. No matter, he misses anyway.

18:05 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: More from United and Cavani very nearly links up well with Ronaldo as his ball squirms just a yard clear of his strike partner.

Next it’s Greenwood’s turn to break in behind and a last-man challenge deprives the youngster a clean break on goal. Cue huge roar from Old Trafford...

18:02 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: Back underway with Neves able to continue.

Greenwood overhits a ball wide to Wan-Bissaka with United certainly favouring that right wing, before the move breaks down.

18:00 , Marc Mayo

28 mins: Just as ten minutes ago, a nice Wan-Bissaka run leads to a cross sent in just above Ronaldo’s jump.

A bit of momentum for United, but that may be cut down with Neves requiring treatment.

17:59 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Another half chance goes begging for the visitors, Jimenez firing over after Shaw gave the ball away in his own half.

For all of Wolves’ good movement forwards, it is not too hard to see why their goal tally has been so low with that end product so lacking.

17:58 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Quiet from Ronaldo so far, and the striker drops deep to spin and send a pretty tame long-range shot straight at Sa.

The flag was up.

17:56 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Podence has to wriggle free of some sterner United defending but can still ping off a shot towards the near-post, which De Gea can gather.

17:54 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: A very entertaining, if goalless, first quarter of the match.

Just a few signs in recent moments that United are ready to make an impact on their opponents...

17:51 , Marc Mayo

19 mins: A bit of United pressure now and a cross from the right is inches over Ronaldo’s fine leap.

Sancho slams a shot into a defender at the far-post. Old Trafford has woken up with that.

17:49 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: Less good from Neves, who winds up from 25 yards and rockets his shot into the Stretford End.

Those sort of efforts need to be much harder for the midfielder to really show his best stuff...

17:47 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: No let-up from the Wolves pressure as Wan-Bissaka makes a last-ditch intervention to stop Podence being sent through on goal.

The corner is deep and cleared by Jones, whose pass is overhit.

17:44 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Absolute trademark Neves, that.

A stunning stop from De Gea to keep it out - but he wasn’t needed as Marcal fired well over from the following corner.

17:44 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: Save!

Podence races down the left and Wan-Bissaka is caught upfield before United lose the ball.

A decent connection from the winger is near enough to De Gea to be comfortable, but from the corner Neves almost delivers a stunning long-range volley. The keeper backtracks and manages to tip it over!

17:42 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: Jones watch brings us another strong interception as Wolves break, a classic lunging clearance as he runs back to goal.

It underlines a fairly open game so far, which both teams are dealing with fairly well.

17:39 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Nothing for Wolves from the corner but United break and Sancho fires a shot into a defender, before the visitors struggle to clear.

Eventually Greenwood fells Marcal and Mike Dean gives the foul.

17:37 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Jimenez drifts out wide as the visitors continue to press for an early goal, winning a corner.

17:34 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: All Wolves in the early minutes with both wings used well, and Marcal whipping in a sweet cross that evades all attackers and defenders. De Gea watches it drift out for a throw.

17:32 , Marc Mayo

1 min: Big cheer from the Stretford End as Jones heads clear to end a smart early move from Wolves.

Kick-off! Man United 0-0 Wolves

17:31 , Marc Mayo

The Bank Holiday action is underway!

17:28 , Marc Mayo

Here come the players!

Kick-off in five minutes!

Bruno Lage has played down Wolves’ lack of goals ahead of the game, with just 13 scored in their 18 league games this campaign.

The Wolves boss tells Sky Sports: “When you look at the stats you see we have just scored 13, but when you look at each game we have created a lot of chances. That is the most important thing.”

On Wolves’ return from a number of Covid cases, he adds: “This is life, I think we are ready to play and the players will do their best. We have big confidence because we’re doing well.”

17:18 , Marc Mayo

Cristiano Ronaldo will captain Manchester United tonight.

Rangnick says: “He’s the most experienced player in his total time with the club. It was him or David De Gea and I wanted an outfield player.”

17:13 , Marc Mayo

Safe standing is in operation for the first time at Old Trafford tonight, after its formal introduction to the Premier League at Chelsea.

Just over 1,500 fans will be allowed to stand in rail seats.

17:08 , Marc Mayo

Ralf Rangnick gives his view on Phil Jones’ return to Sky Sports.

He says: “I can only judge him from the last four weeks in training and he’s always been very professional and very much involved in all the things that happen on the pitch.

“Since the other three centre-backs are all out for injury or Covid reasons, he’s the logical choice for tonight’s game.

“[Maguire] received an injury against Burnley and had problems the day after, yesterday we were hoping he could play, like Eric Bailly, but in both cases it was a no.”

17:03 , Marc Mayo

Playing this game off the back of a Covid outbreak, Wolves boss Bruno Lage has admitted to not knowing how his squad will respond this evening.

He told his pre-match conference: “After 10 days without playing, in your mind, to be ready to play is difficult. I was talking with a player and I asked, ‘Are you ready to play?’.

“He said, ‘I really don’t know’. After 10 days without playing and training you are slow to take the right decisions.

“If you take one more second to decide then the other team come and press. They need to continue to train and adapt as soon as possible.”

16:55 , Marc Mayo

Ralf Rangnick has spoken of his desire to see Edinson Cavani remain with Manchester United through the January window, despite reports of a move to Spain.

“We had quite a few conversations in the last couple of weeks - probably the player with whom I have spoken most,” he said.

“I told him from the very first day that, for me, he is a highly important player. He is probably the only one who can play as a striker back to goal and face to goal.

“His professionalism, his work ethic is just amazing and I told him that I desperately want him to stay until the end of the season. He knows that.”

For Wolves, Semedo replaces Hoever on the right-wing-back position in what looks like a 3-4-3.

Dendoncker drops to the bench having started the draw with Chelsea, bringing Trincao into the XI.

16:42 , Marc Mayo

Bruno Fernandes is back from a ban and is only named on the bench by Ralf Rangnick, who has put Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho on the flanks alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

It is a very attacking bench for the Red Devils, with Fred among the subs and Nemanja Matic starting.

16:40 , Marc Mayo

So Phil Jones is in the starting line-up for Manchester United with Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof all unavailable.

The defender’s last appearance came 708 days ago - in January 2020 when the world was a very different place!

How Wolves line up...

Team news coming at 4.30pm GMT...

Head-to-head record

Manchester United wins: 52

Draws: 20

Wolves wins: 36

Wolves have won only two of their last ten meetings in all competitions, drawing four and losing four.

15:57 , Marc Mayo

Obviously, much depends on what players Lage has to pick from but Wolves are a match for anyone on their day. With United not exactly in a rich vein of form themselves, expect a cagey affair.

1-1 draw.
