Manchester United have seemingly missed out on the opportunity to snap up free agent Isco, with the former Real Madrid star reportedly heading to Bundesliga high-flyers Union Berlin.

Erik ten Hag is said to be considering a late, late move in the January market after influential midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a serious-looking injury in the FA Cup victory over Reading at the weekend.

Isco would have been a like-for-like fit for the Red Devils and will not cost a penny after his release by Sevilla.

The 30-year-old has been a long-term target for United, along with other Premier League clubs. However, he now appears to be on his way to Berlin.

The Spain international saw his contract ripped up by Sevilla after a disastrous stint at the club. And now Spanish publication El Partidazo de COPE states the playmaker will sign an initial six-month contract with the option to extend it by a further a year.

Isco will give Union a huge boost in their unlikely chase for Bundesliga glory. They currently sit second in the table and are only a point behind leaders Bayern Munich.

He is expected to travel to Germany for his medical on deadline day ahead of putting pen to paper.

The news will come as a potential blow to United, if the worst news is confirmed regarding Eriksen.

United waiting on Eriksen scan results

The Dane was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches after the cup win over the Royals, following a bad challenge from Andy Carroll.

So far there has been no news of any results of a scan. Indeed, Ten Hag was unsure of the extent of the injury after the match.

He said: “We have to see what the diagnosis is. But it’s an ankle. It’s always difficult to say in this moment so short after the game has finished. It costs us a minimum of 24 hours before we know that [the extent of the injury] and then I can say more.”

United are back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

The Red Devils already have one foot in the final after their 3-0 win at the City Ground last week.
