A man who wore a t-shirt mocking the Hillsborough tragedy to the pub has been charged by police.

Paul Grange, 50, from Worcester, was photographed in a pub beer garden wearing a shirt that said that the 1989 football stadium disaster that killed 96 people was “God’s way of helping” a pest control firm.

The picture was posted to Twitter and football fans were quick to react, sharing the photo widely before identifying the man’s Facebook page.

He was charged by West Mercia Police for displaying threatening and abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Grange has since been bailed and is now awaiting his court date, scheduled for July.

Superintendent Kevin Purcell said: “I understand the alarm and distress the offensive language shown on this t-shirt will have caused to both the people in and around the pub and further afield.

"I would like to thank the landlord of the pub for his support and all the members of the public who were in the pub at the time and came forward to report it.”
