Syrian Refugee Wielding Machete Kills Woman

A Syrian refugee wielding a machete has killed a woman and injured two other people in the German city of Reutlingen.

The 21-year-old man has been arrested and was apparently acting alone, police said, with the DPA news agency reporting authorities are working on the assumption that it was a "crime of passion".

Footage from the scene shows a man running away before cutting to him lying on the ground, his face bloodied and his hands cuffed by police.

Police have told Sky News there is no evidence pointing to the incident, which happened outside a bus station, being a terrorist attack.

Spokesman Bjoern Reusch said that witnesses said the man, who was known to police, was having an argument with the woman before attacking her about 4.30pm local time.

The man was hit by a BMW, which ended the attack.

The driver's brother has told Sky News he did it deliberately and has been released from hospital after suffering minor injuries.

German media has reported that the attacker and the murdered woman were close and worked in the same fast food restaurant.

A police spokesman said he could not confirm a story in the Bild newspaper that the dead woman was pregnant.

News channel NTV said there was panic in the city centre following the attack, which comes just two days after a German-Iranian teenager shot dead nine people in Munich before taking his own life.

The 18-year-old Munich attacker is believed to have been "obsessed" with mass killers such as Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik and had no links to Islamic State (IS).

A week ago, a teenage asylum seeker went on a rampage with an axe and a knife on a regional train near the southern city of Wuerzburg, injuring five people.

German authorities said the Wuerzburg attacker was believed to be a "lone wolf" who was "inspired" by IS but not a member of the terror group.
