Man and woman arrested after pedestrian dies in fatal collision in Ilford

Detectives have arrested a man and woman following the death of a pedestrian hit by a car in east London.

The victim, 46, died in hospital after the collision at just after midnight on Sunday.

Officers were scrambled to Ley Street at the junction with Benton Road, Ilford, where they found the fatally injured pedestrian.

The Range Rover police believe was involved in the incident was later located at a garage nearby.

A 28-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They have been taken into custody and are being questioned

Officers from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for eyewitnesses and anyone who may have dashcam forage to come forward.

A police statement said: “Emergency services were called to Ley Street, at the junction of Benton Road, Ilford, at 00.18hrs on Sunday, 17 March to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

“A 46-year-old man was found with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.

“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“The car had left the scene before police arrived.

“Enquiries were carried out by officers from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit and the car, a Range Rover, was located at a garage in Ilford

“A 28-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They have been taken into custody.”
