Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola considering summer move for Tottenham's Dele Alli, claims Xavi

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is weighing up a move for Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli this summer, according to Barcelona legend Xavi.

Alli has established himself as a key member of Mauricio Pochettino's side and is widely regarded as one of the most promising prospects in world football.

The 21-year-old picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award earlier this week, highlighting how well he is thought of among his peers.

Real Madrid are understood to have monitored Alli, who signed a new six-year deal at White Hart Lane in September 2016.

Xavi, who remains in contact with Guardiola, believes the City boss is among Alli's potential suitors and will have been tracking the midfielder's progress closely as he prepares to strengthen his squad this summer.

“I speak with Pep, and I know he thinks it is important to sign English players," Xavi told the Sun.

“I am sure in the summer he will look also across Europe for players to improve the squad, but also I expect him to look in The Premier League as well.

“At the moment the best English player there is and also one of the best in Europe is Dele Alli. We are looking at a very special player."

Alli joined Spurs from MK Dons for just £5million but the midfielder's market value has swelled in line with his impressive performances at elite level.

Guardiola would certainly be unable to sign the England international on the cheap but Xavi believes City have the resources at their disposal to take Alli to the Etihad Stadium.

"Technically he is the sort of player that Pep likes, the sort of player that suits the style of game that Pep likes his teams to play.

“I am sure it is not going to be a player that Tottenham will want to let go, but we know Manchester City have big resources,” the World Cup winner added.

Meanwhile, Standard Sport understands Kyle Walker has held talks with Mauricio Pochettino over his future amid interest from City and Manchester United.
