Phil Foden is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract with Manchester City.

The 18-year-old midfielder - regarded as one of the most exciting talents England has produced for years - will shortly put pen to paper on a lucrative new deal.

Foden, a lifelong City supporter, has been linked with Paris St-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and a host of other clubs, but he has only ever seen his future at his boyhood club.

Negotiations between City and Foden’s representatives have been swift and an announcement is expected in due course.

Dubbed the “Stockport Iniesta” owing to similarities in his play to Barcelona great Andres Iniesta, Foden has made 10 appearances for City this season and is highly regarded by manager Pep Guardiola, who has previously described the player as a “gift”.

Foden is considered a long-term successor internally to David Silva at City and made his debut for England Under-21 in a 7-0 win over Andorra last month.

He was the driving force behind England Under-20’s World Cup win last year, scoring twice in the final against Spain and earning the player of the tournament award.

City’s hierarchy have been on a concerted drive over the past 12 months to tie key talents to new long-term contract and Foden is about to become the latest of those.

Raheem Sterling signed a new five-year contract on Friday worth up to £300,000 a week, following on from the likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Ederson, Nicolas Otamendi, Silva, Fernandinho and Silva, all of whom have penned new deals at different points over the past year.

City are also in talks with Leroy Sane over a new contract and the Germany winger is expected to commit his future before long.

In addition, Guardiola has spoken about an extension for captain Vincent Kompany, who will be a free agent next summer. Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph could also net new deals.
