Anthony Martial appears to have denied reports he could be bound for the Manchester United exit door after a disappointing second season at Old Trafford.

A report on a gambling website yesterday claimed Martial would tell United boss Jose Mourinho, with whom he has endured a frosty relationship, that he wanted to leave this summer.

Those claims came only days after Arsenal were linked with a £40million move for the 21-year-old if they are unable to prize Kylian Mbappe away from Monaco for a world record fee.

However Martial offered a succinct response to those reports on Twitter, posting: “the rumours are false.”

Martial became the most expensive teenager in football history in September 2015 when United paid an initial £36m for Monaco, with three clauses potentially taking the French forward’s price tag to £57.6m.

The youngster enjoyed an exceptional debut season under Louis van Gaal, scoring 17 goals in 49 games, but suffered a sophomore slump when Mourinho took over, losing his starting spot on the left wing to the likes of Marcus Rashford and starting only 18 Premier League games.

Though rumours of a move to Arsenal may die down in the short term it is worth noting that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has previously professed his admiration for Martial, claiming after the striker joined United that he had tried to sign him only to be told he was not for sale.
