Luke Shaw should cut his losses at Manchester United and attempt to resurrect his career at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino, according to Paul Scholes.

Shaw joined United from Southampton - Pochettino's first coaching role in England - for £30million in 2014, but suffered an horrific double leg break in September 2015.

The England international returned the following April, but has failed to convince Jose Mourinho of his talents as Ashley Young has taken the regular left-back starting role at Old Trafford.

Shaw suffered his latest ignominy during Saturday's FA Cup win over Brighton, with the 22-year-old substituted at half-time despite a solid display with United leading the Seagulls 1-0.

The United boss slammed United's performance despite a 2-0 win, and said after the match that he could have taken off Antonio Valencia but chose Shaw as at "least Antonio defensively was capable of some good positionings".

With Shaw's prospects looking increasingly bleak at United, Old Trafford legend Scholes said the youngster should attempt to reunite with Pochettino this summer as he still has the potential to become an elite player.

"I still believe he could be the best in the world and in the summer he could go to Tottenham or somewhere and he could improve," Scholes told BT Sport.

"I couldn't see a difference between him and Young.

"I think sometimes, managers get in their head that there's a player not for them.

"For me I think he could be brilliant but his manager will still find something wrong with him.

"It is disappointing because when Luke Shaw came you thought what a player that is and he could be the best.

"It's a relationship that come the summer will end. It keeps going on and on but he isn't playing games."

Shaw has previously been linked to Tottenham when United were reportedly interested in a potential swap deal involving fellow left-back Danny Rose, though the Red Devils' interest has since cooled with Rose becoming Spurs' second choice option to Ben Davies this season.
