Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes enjoying ‘dream’ start to life at ‘biggest club in England’

Bruno Fernandes’ start to life at Manchester United has been a dream come true, according to the Portuguese midfielder.

Fernandes, 25, joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side from Sporting Lisbon in January for a fee that could reach over £67 million.

The Portugal international made his Premier League debut in a 0-0 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford. Fernandes started again in United’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, assisting Harry Maguire’s 66th minute header.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Fernandes revealed just how much he has enjoyed life in England so far.

“I feel great,” he said. “I play for the biggest club in England and I am really happy, it’s a dream come true.”

The midfielder scored or assisted 23 goals in just 22 games for Sporting across the Portuguese Primeira Liga and Europa League in 2019/20.

Fernandes was upbeat when assessing United’s performance in a victory that saw the Red Devils climb to 7th in the league, three points behind Chelsea in fourth.

“It was a difficult game, [Chelsea are] a great team,” he said. “We can do much better with the ball, but here it was a good game. We need to keep forward in this way.”

United have struggled for consistency in Solskjaer’s first full season in charge but have won three of their last four in all competitions without conceding a single goal.

They travel to Club Brugge next in the Europa League’s round of 32 stage, before facing relegation-threatened Watford at home on Sunday.

Solskjaer’s men have played all their ‘Big Six’ opponents apart from Tottenham Hotspur away from home in the league and will be hoping Fernandes can lead the charge towards the Champions League spots.

United captain Maguire was full of praise for the Portuguese after the midfielder’s second appearance in England.

“The quality on the ball he brings, technical ability, the presence he's brought in, he's a leader,” Maguire said. “Long may it continue.”
