Manchester United could reportedly trigger Mason Greenwood’s year-long contract extension this summer in a bid to try and get a higher fee for the attacker.

A number of Spanish outfits are thought to be interested in permanently signing the 22-year-old - who has 12 months left on his United contract - after scoring 10 goals in 36 matches for loan club Getafe this campaign.

Following an internal investigation last year, United concluded that the player would not continue to play for the club after being charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault in January 2022 - charges that were dropped in February 2023. Greenwood has always denied all allegations.

However, new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe left the door open for his return earlier this year, stating that a "process” will be carried out before the next steps are taken. Now, iNews claims that United are considering triggering Greenwood’s extension.

The report suggests that the club are hoping to sell him for £40m this summer, with Juventus, Napoli and Atletico Madrid interested. Borussia Dortmund have also been linked but are mainly plotting to lure United loanee Jadon Sancho back on a permanent basis.

Supposedly, United hope to sell the attacker permanently but may also look to loan Greenwood out again with an obligation-to-buy clause attached. Getafe are thought to be interested in his return but are likely to be priced out.

Meanwhile, Aksam claims that Celtic are closing in on a deal for United back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, with the Scottish champions prepared to offer him a four-year deal amid the exit of Joe Hart.

Bayindir has played just once for United - an FA Cup third round clash with Newport County back in January - since his deadline arrival last year, meaning he has earned more appearances for Turkey (three) than his club this season.
