Jose Mourinho will carefully manage Diogo Dalot’s Premier League introduction, despite his outstanding debut on Wednesday night.

The Portuguese right back produced a thrilling display in Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Young Boys in Bern , but will sit out Saturday’s clash with Wolves.

Mourinho claimed this week that Dalot could be United’s answer on the right of defence for the next 10 years.

But he plans to protect the 19-year-old, who arrived from Porto in a £19m deal this summer with a knee injury - and will save him for Tuesday’s League Cup tie with Derby.

“I want him in this process of adaptation to play totally fresh,” said United’s manager. “So he’s not playing tomorrow, he plays Tuesday again.

“To play for Manchester United is difficult enough for a kid of 19 year’s old coming from another country and after an important injury and surgery. He doesn’t need to face more difficulties.

“It was a difficult pitch (in Bern), I want him to be recovered totally and on Tuesday to play again.”

Dalot and Luke Shaw gave an exciting glimpse of the future, with both excelling against Young Boys.

Mourinho added: “He showed for the ones that don’t know him very well that he is not a player to be here just for his development. He is a player to be here for compete for positions - he’s a very good player.”

United face Wolves on Saturday as they go in search of a fourth straight win, following the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham last month.

The form of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling at the heart of defence has been key to that run.

Mourinho - who was so desperate to add a world class centre back this summer - believes his side have rediscovered their defensive stability after such a shaky start to the season.

“I think the team as a team we are resolving the defensive problems better than before,” he said. “I don’t want to say was (Eric) Bailly or (Phil) Jones and is now Smalling or Lindelof.

“I think the team is more compact, more solid, the spirit, the cooperation, the empathy, the communication. All of that has improved in the team and good results bring confidence.

“I think we are improving as a team. I don’t want to say our improvement has the name of Chris or Victor. The team is playing better and they are part of the team that plays these matches.”

Phil Jones is available again after recovering from a hamstring injury - but Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera are still out.
