Manchester United hit by new injury problems and transfer confusion ahead of Liverpool clash
Manchester United are dealing with a number of injury problems for the showdown with Liverpool on Sunday. And ahead of the fixtute at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag selection headache could worsen due to the incomings and outgoings on transfer deadline day.
United have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer, with four signings already made and Paris-Saint Germain's Manuel Ugarte also closing in on a move to Old Trafford. Around £138m has been spent so far and a number of prominent players have been moved on. Scott McTominay looks set to make the switch to Napoli and Jadon Sancho is also close to departing.
It means United will be without a number of players for the game against Liverpool, with Ten Hag confirming Mason Mount will not be available. Other notable absentees include Rasmus Hojlund who has yet to make an appearance for United this season and new summer signing Leny Yoro who made the switch to Old Trafford for £52million.
Luke Shaw is unavailable after a short stint playing for England during the Euros, Victor Lindelof is injured and Tyrell Malacia is on a slow path to recovery, after missing a full season of action.
Ten Hag said: “Mason Mount, as you will have seen, is not available for the press room. I think that is it; it will be the same squad as last week."
Speaking about McTominay, Ten Hag said:: “He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it's the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sells and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value.”
Meanwhile, Sancho could have finally found a way out of Carrington, with Chelsea expected to land a deal for the winger, to the detriment of the Dutchman’s squad.
The United boss said: “He is a player in our squad, and we are happy with him. We need a good squad, we need depth. We have to play many games until January. After the break we play every third day, so we need options.”
Ugarte is also expected to miss the game, with the deal is yet to be announced, and international clearance will likely not be granted to the Uruguayan before the fixture.
Ten Hag was asked about Ugarte in his press conference: “It looks like you know everything so I can’t tell you more than you already know. It is not completed yet. Expect it? Yes, we expect it, but I can’t confirm it.”
