Manchester United have lost the Europa League final after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal.

After a goalless 120 minutes it was a miss by David DeGea in an incredible shootout that handed the Spanish side the trophy.

Villarreal opened the scoring in the 29th minute after Edinson Cavani gave away a free-kick that Dani Parejo swung in from the left, with Gerard Moreno directing home.

United made it 1-1 in the 55th minute, when Cavani latched onto a loose ball from six yards out.

And that was how the game ended ahead of a nervy 30 minutes of extra time as United's players tired.
