Manchester United player ratings as Lisandro Martinez and Amad superb vs Southampton

Manchester United secured their second win of the Premier League season with a 3-0 triumph at Southampton.

Andre Onana saved Cameron Archer's tame spot-kick in the 34th minute and United went 1-0 up through Matthijs de Ligt's first goal for the club two minutes later.

Marcus Rashford claimed his first goal of the campaign on 41 minutes to give United a 2-0 lead at half-time. Manuel Ugarte came on in the second half for his United debut ahead of a possible full debut against Barnsley in the League Cup third round on Tuesday. Alejandro Garnacho added a late goal to complete a good afternoon's work.

Here are how the players rated at St Mary's:

Andre Onana

Thwarted Tyler Dibling at 0-0 and then stopped Cameron Archer's back-pass of a penalty. Seven minutes later, United were 2-0 up. 8

Noussair Mazraoui

Another solid showing at right back and starting to become more prominent in attacks, hitting the side-netting. 6

Matthijs de Ligt

Kyle Walker-Peters failed to punish him and then De Ligt punished Southampton to end a chastening week on a resilient note. 7

Lisandro Martinez

Back to his old self. Read the danger perfectly a number of times and his distribution was smoother on a good day for United's centre halves. 8

Diogo Dalot

Continued at left back and had such an uncomfortable time against Dibling he clumsily conceded a penalty. Will have been relieved to see Dibling go off. 6

Kobbie Mainoo

His subdued start to the season continued. Booked for deliberately handling the ball after he dawdled on it. Stayed on longer than anticipated. 6

Christian Eriksen

Did not have the smoothest of starts to his reunion with Mainoo but United scored from two corner-kick routines he started. 6

Amad

United's best player. Quick, strong and almost always made the right decision. Integral to United's openings before they scored. 8

Bruno Fernandes

Supported Joshua Zirkzee in the pressing that United switched to 4-4-2 out of possession and he crossed for De Ligt to score. Booked for dissent. 6

Marcus Rashford

Scored his first goal of the campaign with an accurate strike to build on the chances he created against Liverpool. 7

Joshua Zirkzee

Failed to convert an excellent chance at 0-0 after a slow start but grew into the game, forcing a save from Aaron Ramsdale and using the ball well. 6

Subs

Harry Maguire

Booked within seconds of coming on. 5

Alejandro Garnacho

Scythed down by Jack Stephens, who was sent off. A threat and scored. 8

Manuel Ugarte

Drew a foul with one of his first actions. 6

Jonny Evans

Slotted in at left back. 6

Casemiro

A late introduction. N/A

Manager

Made the right number of changes and overlooking an outright defensive midfielder did not cost United. Patience with Rashford paid off - as did Amad's recall. 8
