Manchester United romped to a 7-0 thrashing against League One outfit Barnsley on Tuesday evening with Christian Eriksen being one of three United men who scored a brace.

The Dane looked to have one foot out of the exit door during the summer transfer window as he was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford having made just 22 Premier League appearances last term.

However, against the Colliers, Eriksen looked back to his best; his first goal came after a late dart into the box before Bruno Fernandes’ pinpoint ball allowed Eriksen to sweep the ball home. His second was also set up by the Portuguese but this time Eriksen had a lot more to do; from the edge of the penalty area he unleashed a a powerful shot into the bottom corner to round up proceedings.

After the match, Eriksen posted to Instagram after the game with his snap captioned: “High fives all around.” Several of his teammates commented on the photograph with Amad saying: “Maestro.” Joshua Zirkzee wrote: “Topper.” With Fernandes adding: “Class.”

The likes of Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford also took the time to praise the Danish midfielder, showing how popular Eriksen is the Erik ten Hag’s dressing room.

At 32, by no means, will Eriksen be a regular starter every week, with Casemiro - despite his recent form, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte likely to fill the midfield spaces. However, Eriksen did start the weekend’s victory away against Southampton which could be a clue to how he has risen up Ten Hag’s pecking order.

After the game, Eriksen explained his current situation amid rumours of a summer move, he said: “I feel very good being at United. If they told me to leave, I would leave, but I didn’t hear that.

“I’m also a guy who likes being in a place where my family is settled and at the same time being in a place where I can benefit and play, that’s always going to be my aim.”

The midfielder, who is in the final year of his contract, added: “It’s difficult to ask the manager in the off-season how many minutes I’m going to get in a season. If he starts promising minutes to players, we’re going to have a long season.

“There was no speaking in that sense, just head down, work hard, and focus on each game. There’s one year left on my contract, so my focus is going to be on this year, going full out and see what happens afterwards.”

United and Eriksen will now turn their attention to Saturday’s trip to south London where they will face Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace in the 5:30pm kick-off at Selhurst Park. For most United fans, the very thought of a trip to Croydon will fill them with dread after last season’s 4-0 thrashing thanks to a Michael Olise brace. Thankfully for United Olise has left for pastures new and Palace have not started their league campaign the way they would have wanted with just two points on the board so far.
