It marks the first time the 35-year-old has not been named in a United starting line-up when available in the league since his arrival last summer.

Elsewhere, David De Gea returns to the starting line-up after missing last weekend's 3-0 win over Sunderland.

The goalkeeper had been sidelined with a hip injury, with Sergio Romeo deputising in his absence, but is available to face the Premier League leaders.

United enjoying opposite fortunes to their opponents at Old Trafford, with Chelsea without first-choice keeper Thibaut Courtois out of the game with an ankle complaint.
