Manchester United 2-2 Derby County (7-8 penalty shootout)
EFL Cup 2018/19
Venue: Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho was given a bloody nose by his former midfielder Frank Lampard as Derby deservedly sent 10-man Manchester United crashing out of the EFL Cup on penalties.

A night that started with fresh questions over Paul Pogba's future ended with one of the best players that the Portuguese has ever worked with securing the finest win of his short managerial career.

Derby looked to have secured victory inside 90 minutes after substitute Jack Marriott followed up the exceptional Harry Wilson free-kick that cancelled out Juan Mata's early goal, only for Marouane Fellaini to direct home deep into stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw.

But former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson proved the Sky Bet Championship side's shootout hero, saving Phil Jones' attempt to secure an 8-7 triumph at a stunned Old Trafford.

Head to head

The two sides have met 106 times before, with United winning 46 matches, Derby 31, and the teams sharing 29 draws.

United and Derby have not met in the league since 2008, but have played five cup games since then - the last being a 2-0 FA Cup win for United at Old Trafford last season.

Team news

Mourinho will still be without Marcus Rashford as the forward serves the final match of a three-game domestic ban, though Nemanja Matic is back in contention after completing his own one-match suspension.

Marcos Rojo is still likely to be out, while Ander Herrera is a doubt for the Red Devils.

Mourinho could ring the changes after Saturday's disappointing draw against Wolves, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot all set for a chance to impress.
