Manchester United will try to overcome their semi-final hoodoo under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when they take on AS Roma in the last four of the Europa League tonight.

The Red Devils were knocked of the Carabao Cup at the penultimate stage by eventual winners Manchester City in January - taking their tally of semi-final defeats under Solskjaer to four in just 12 months, with that record also including last season’s defeat by City in the same competition plus their FA Cup loss to Chelsea and painful Europa League elimination by Sevilla.

Solskjaer will be desperate to make it fifth time lucky against Roma, with the Europa League offering the Norwegian’s last chance for silverware this term.

United have met with preciously little resistance since dropping into the competition following their Champions League exit, with big aggregate wins over LaLiga sides Real Sociedad and Granada sandwiched between a closer affair against AC Milan.

Looking to secure a positive result at Old Trafford to take back to the Italian capital for next week’s second leg is a Roma side that topped a group containing Young Boys, CFR Cluj and CSKA Sofia before brushing aside Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk and fighting hard to oust Ajax.

However, Paulo Fonseca’s Giallorossi currently sit a distant seventh in Serie A amid a three-match winless run, with Europa League success likely vital to their hopes of playing European football again next season.

Man United vs Roma prediction

United flattered to deceive in a dull draw against fierce rivals Leeds that was overshadowed somewhat by the Super League fiasco, though they had won each of their five matches before that trip to north Yorkshire.

They have looked untroubled since dropping into this competition and will fancy their chances of ending that run of semi-final defeats against a Roma team that have won just one of their last five games.

There will surely be no repeat of the famous 7-1 Champions League quarter-final drubbing under Sir Alex Ferguson from 14 years ago, but United are more than capable of securing a solid lead to take to the Stadio Olimpico.

2-0 home win.
