How Manchester United winning the Europa League will impact Tottenham's Champions League hopes

Manchester United's Europa League Final exploits could significantly impact Tottenham's hopes of progressing far in next season's Champions League.

With the domestic seasons coming to a conclusion, the makeup of Europe's elite competition is already taking shape with coefficients being considered.

As it stands, Tottenham are in Pot 3 with a coefficient of 77,135 along with the confirmed qualified Anderlecht, Basel and Liverpool which means a far tougher draw.

Ajax (67,212) will join Spurs in Pot 3 should they win at the Friends Arena, but United's superior coefficient of 93,315 will see them jump above Mauricio Pochettino & Co. and into Pot 2.

Only Napoli (88,666) boast a better coefficient than Tottenham in Pot 3 but their place in the group stage is not yet confirmed. They sit third in Serie A heading into the final game, trailing second-placed Roma by one point.

Third spot in Serie A is only good enough for a spot in the play-offs. If Napoli reach the group stages and Ajax win the Europa League, Napoli will be in Pot 2. If Napoli fail to reach the competition proper, then Spurs will take their spot in Pot 2.

That's not all: Sevilla (112,942) are also in the Champions League play-offs and have a coefficient worthy of Pot 2, so Spurs would also need the Spanish team to not reach the group stage to make Pot 2.

So, this list of 'ifs' starts on Wednesday evening with United in the Europa League final...

What must happen for Spurs to make Pot 2

  • Ajax win the Europa League final

  • Napoli finish in third place in Serie A

  • Napoli and Sevilla to lose in the Champions League play-offs
