Man United XI vs Tottenham: Starting lineup, confirmed team news, injuries - Solskjaer goes three at the back

Manchester United have switched to a three-man defence for this evening’s crucial clash with Tottenham.

Raphael Varane returns from injury and starts alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the backline.

Varane - a £34million summer arrival from Real Madrid - has missed each of United’s last three games as a result of the issue, with United conceding four against Leicester, two versus Atalanta and being hit for five in a truly miserable humiliation by fierce rivals Liverpool last weekend.

Before that, Red Devils captain Harry Maguire had been sidelined with a calf problem, meaning it has been more than a month since the hugely under-pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been able to field both defenders at the same time.

Edinson Cavani also comes into the team as he starts up front with Cristiano Ronaldo, with Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood both on the bench.

Varane's compatriot Anthony Martial does not return to the matchday squad in north London, having also resumed training in the aftermath of a knock that has seen him miss the last three games.

Paul Pogba is unavailable as he begins a three-match suspension following his woeful challenge on Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita just 15 minutes after coming on at Old Trafford that brought a straight red card after a VAR review.
