The director of The Holiday has shut down rumours of a sequel to the hit Christmas film.

Social media was buzzing with excitement on Tuesday about a new film in development, 16 years after the Christmas rom-com was first released.

Rumours were circling that Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black had all signed on to reprise their roles in a sequel following the lives of Amanda, Iris, Graham and Miles.

Now the original film's director Nancy Meyers has revealed that there are no plans to make another.

Posting on Instagram, she shared a screenshot of an article about the sequel and wrote: "So many DM’s about this - sorry but it’s not true."

Kate Winslet also revealed to People that she had not heard of plans for a sequel, saying: "I read something about that, but it's the first I've heard of it.

"I promise you not an agent or a representative or anyone from the first one around has had any conversation with me about that.

"Hand on heart, that's never come up."
