How many North East castles can you recognise? Try to name them all in our quiz
We're lucky to have a wealth of history on our doorsteps right here in the North East with an incredible collection of medieval fortresses - but how many of our region's castles can you name?
Northumberland alone is home to more castles than any other county in England, telling the story of battles held centuries ago from Roman invasions to Viking attacks. From castles that are still lived in today to striking ruins, Northumberland has more than 70 castles to explore.
You can find them peppered along the coast, perched on islands, and standing guard over rivers; each one several hundred years old and brimming with history to discover. And there are yet more castles dotted around the other areas of the region, from Sunderland and County Durham to Newcastle - which of course took its name from the Norman fortress built in 1080, on the site where the 12th century Castle Keep still stands in the city today.
