Map reveals North East pub hotspots - with drinkers in Northumberland spoilt for choice

Drinkers in Northumberland are more well stocked with pubs than anywhere else in the North East.

The local authority has a total of 268 pubs within its borders, according to official figures from the Office for National Statistics’ access to local amenities report. That works out as the equivalent of 81.9 for every 100,000 people living there.

That’s the highest rate for any local authority in the North East. County Durham has the next highest number of pubs relative to its population.

The area’s 402 boozers works out as 75.5 for every 100,000 people. That’s followed by Darlington (74.2 per 100,000), South Tyneside (65.7 per 100,000), and Gateshead (63.3 per 100,000).

Sunderland has a rate of 61.2, North Tyneside one of 51.9, Hartlepool 50.3, and Newcastle upon Tyne 48.1.

Residents of Derbyshire Dales are the country’s most well supplied for pubs though. There are 184.5 pubs for every 100,000 people living in the area. Westminster has the next highest rate (168.8 per 100,000), followed by Powys (165.1 per 100,000), and Pembrokeshire (148.8 per 100,000).


Our region’s more built up areas have the most pubs relative to their geographic size, however. South Tyneside’s 98 pubs works out as the equivalent of 3.9 for every square mile.

Westminster’s 357 pubs is equivalent to 43 every square mile.

North Tyneside’s 110 pubs work out as 3.5 per square mile, while Newcastle upon Tyne’s 150 pubs are 3.4 per square mile, and Sunderland’s 172 are 3.2 per square mile.

London dominates the list of areas with the highest density of pubs in the country.

The City of London has the equivalent of 71.7 pubs per square mile, the highest rate in England and Wales.

Westminster has 43 pubs per square mile, Islington has 37.7, Camden has 24.6, Kensington and Chelsea has 24.6, and Tower Hamlets has 22.5.
