Map shows thousands of North East homes without power as Storm Éowyn hits 40,000 properties
Tens of thousands of households in the North East are currently without power as Storm Éowyn causes disruption across the region.
Northern Powergrid's live outage map shows widespread disruption, with areas including Crook, County Durham, and Winlaton, Gateshead, among the most affected. As of 2.30pm on Friday, a total of 40,967 households had been affected by outages in Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear, Northern Powergrid reports, with 26,452 still without power.
Northern Powergrid said it had seen significant disruption to its network and customers' power supply since Storm Éowyn brought strong winds of over 80mph since the early hours the morning. However, the company added that it had been expecting disruption and teams were working to restore power.

So far, staff have managed to restore power to 14,515 properties in Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear. Northern Powergrid said that customer support vehicles are making their way to areas most impacted and welfare support arrangements are being coordinated to support customers.
In a statement on its website, Northern Powergrid added: "The storm is still impacting our network, and we expect this to continue through the rest of today. We will keep monitoring our progress to give customers the best estimate of when power is likely to be back on.
"This may change as the impact of the storm on the network becomes clear, and we need to ensure it is safe for our engineers to be working, but we will keep customers informed as soon as we know more."
