The UK Government has imposed a 14 day quarantine on travellers from Spain, following spikes in infection rates in the Mediterranean country and fears of a second wave.

On Thursday, the town of Totana in the region of Murcia was the first to be placed in a ‘Phase One’ lockdown after a spike in cases linked to a nightclub. Catalonia and Malaga have also seen recent rises. The government of Catalonia  ordered nightclubs and late-night bars in the region to close for two weeks from July 25.

It is not clear when a travel corridor could be re-established with Spain.

You can still go on holiday to Spain, but you will be required to self-isolate on your return. If you go to the mainland, you would also be travelling against Foreign Office (FCO) advice. The Balearic and Canary Islands are not included in the FCO guidance against all non-essential travel.

For those still planning a trip to Spain, it may prove useful to be aware of local infection rates.

So which areas of Spain are seeing a rise in Covid-19 cases?

High increase

Aragón

2,113 new cases, 161 cases per 100,000 (last 7 days)

The landlocked region of Aragón, to the west of Catalonia, has recorded a total of 9,772 cases of Covid-19. In the last seven days, it has reported 2,113 cases, meaning 161 people per 100,000 have tested positive for Covid-19. This is currently the highest rate per 100,000, based on seven-day figures, of anywhere in Spain.

It is unlikely that a localised lockdown in Aragón would affect many holidays, as most British holidaymakers head to Spain's beach towns. The major city is Zaragoza, and other popular tourist spots include Albarracín and Teruel.

Notable increase

Navarra

536 new cases, 82 cases per 100,000 (last 7 days)

The small historic Basque kingdom of Navarra has had a relative spike of cases in recent weeks. In total there have been 6,244 cases here, and an additional 518 in the last week (meaning 82 per 100,000 people). The area is not centre of the UK tourist map, but rather is defined by its small and sleepy villages, although anyone with a trip to Pamplona may wish to keep an eye on developments here in the coming days and weeks.

On Wednesday, the Navarre regional government moved the Pamplona neighborhood of Menillorri back to Phase 2 of the coronavirus de-escalation plan, after 122 cases were detected in the area.

Catalonia

5,702 new cases, 75 cases per 100,000 (last 7 days)

From July 25,, the government of Catalonia has ordered all nightclubs and late-night bars across the region  to close for at least two weeks.

In Barcelona, one of Europe's most visited cities, Catalonian authorities urged people to stay home on the weekend starting July 19 and not gather in groups of more than 10.

Almost four million people are affected by the move, where restaurants will have to limit capacity to 50 per cent of the usual amount. Residents are urged to shop online and cultural and sports events will also be limited; but museums will remain open for now.

Travel has also been curtailed in the county of Segria in Catalonia.
