March for Our Lives: Thousands of gun control activists to join protests across the globe

Thousands of people are set to march in more than 800 locations around the world demanding stricter gun control in the US.

March for Our Lives protests will take place across the globe on Saturday.

The main event will take place in Washington DC, while solidarity marches will be held in other locations including London.

It comes after the devastating shooting massacre at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida which left 17 dead.

Following the shooting, survivors formed the #NeverAgain movement and are being helped by gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety to organise and coordinate the event.

Thousands of teachers, students and parents will attend the protests across the world.

The March for Our Lives has three demands:

It wants a law to be passed to ban assault weapons, a stop to the sale of high-capacity magazines and a restriction on the amount of ammunition.

It is also calling for the loopholes in background checks to be closed including online and at gun shows.

A march will be taking place in London outside the US embassy and will begin at 12pm and a minute's silence will be held at around 1.20pm.

The rally is organised by US nationals studying at the London School of Economics and being held in solidarity with the Washington DC march.

Elsewhere in the UK, demonstrations will take place in Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle, Dublin and Cork.

Organisers have raised more than three million on GoFundMe which is set to be split between the Action Fund and the Broward Education Foundation to support families of those injured or killed in the shooting.

George and Amal Clooney donated $500,000 (£353,000) to the cause with Oprah Winfrey and Stephen Spielberg matching the amount. Ellen DeGeneres and Shutterfly made a joint donation of $50,000 (£35,000)

While Italian fashion brand Gucci also donated $500,000 (£353,000) to the cause.

On March 14, students across America walked out of their school for 17 minutes to honour those killed in the Parkland massacre. It was seen as a prelude to this weekend's march.
