Margot Robbie has undergone an Oscar-worthy transformation to take on her next royal role.

The Australian actress, 27, looked unrecognisable as she got into character as Queen Elizabeth I for upcoming biopic, Mary Queen of Scots.

Robbie was pictured sporting a pale balding head with a mass of curly red hair as she filmed scenes in London.

The actress, who looked worlds away from the glamour of her red carpet appearances, was wearing a corset and traditional Tudor clothing as well as boasting a pitted complexion and a large prosthetic nose.

She has joined a long list of actresses who have taken on the Virgin Queen including Judie Dench, Bette Davis, Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett and Miranda Richardson.

The upcoming historical biopic is based on John Guy’s biography My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots and will follow the troubled life of the 16th century Scottish monarch.

It will explore her attempt to overthrow Elizabeth and become Queen of England, only to be imprisoned before being executed.

Brooklyn actress Saoirse Ronan will play the titular character in a cast that includes David Tenant, Guy Pearce, Martin Compston, Downton Abbey‘s Brendan Coyle, Dunkirk‘s Jack Lowden, and Taylor Swift’s rumoured boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

It will also mark Josie Rourke’s directorial debut.

Mary Queen of Scots is slated for release in 2018.
