Emmerdale star Mark Charnock has opened up about filming scenes that will feature his character Marlon Dingle suffering a stroke.

Marlon is set to suffer a stroke in the soap in an upcoming episode and speaking to This Morning, he revealed that he's gone to extra lengths for his performance.

He said on the show that he did not want to see his prosthetic makeup before filming his scenes: "I’m not a method actor at all, but I asked them to cover all the mirrors up in makeup when they put it on."

Charnock, who has been on the soap for 25 years, added: "I wanted, when we shot it – what the viewers will see tonight is when I see it, the first time I’d seen it. It had an impact on me. The reaction viewers will see tonight is real, you know?"

Charnock and the Emmerdale producers worked closely with the Stroke Association to ensure the storyline was accurate to what stroke victims and their loved ones experience.

Charnock also said that it will not be all doom and gloom for his character and stressed that there would be moments of 'light' especially as Marlon is known for being one of the show's more comedic characters.

The storyline will be a long-running one with viewers set to see the long-term effects of the stroke on Marlon's health and how his family rally around him.

Emmerdale has previously received acclaim for its depiction of Alzheimer's. A past episode of the show was told from the point of view of Ashley Thomas who was suffering from the disease and clips of it are used by charities to show what it is like living with the incurable condition.

Marlon's stroke storyline begins Monday 21 March.
