Mark Gatiss was shocked by Russell T Davies’ ‘Doctor Who’ comeback.

Gatiss, 55 – who is one of the show’s most prolific guest writers – admitted he was taken completely by surprise when it was revealed that Davies will be taking over from current boss Chris Chibnall after season 13 concludes next year.

Speaking to RadioTimes about Davies, who stepped down as showrunner in 2010, he said: “You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard. I was on holiday. I literally had to sit down. I got a text, and I just sort of sat down on a tree stump, and went, “What?” It’s just amazing. Yeah, very exciting. Very exciting times.

“It’s the most brilliant thing because Russell’s doing it for all the right reasons. He’s on a creative high. He doesn’t have to do it, but he wants to do it. And I’ve no idea what he’s going to do. Isn’t that a brilliant thought?

“Every ‘Doctor Who’ fan has an idea of how they would do ‘Doctor Who’. Russell has done it, and now he’s doing it again. So God knows what that will be.”

And he hasn't ruled out his own return to the show as he previously worked with Davies on 'Doctor Who'.

He teased: "I’ve no idea. Who knows? But, you know, I had a wonderful run. I wrote for four Doctors and left by playing the brigadier’s grandfather in Peter Capaldi’s regeneration story with David Bradley.”

Details over what’s to come for the new series are yet to be revealed.

However, speculation over who is going to be the fourteenth Doctor is rife, as Jodie Whittaker who plays the thirteenth Doctor will be leaving alongside Chibnall.
