Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Marlon Dingle has rejected Rhona Goskirk's proposal in Emmerdale.

It was actually Marlon who was planning to pop the question to long-time partner Rhona earlier this year, but his stroke has understandably derailed any thought of marriage until this week.

Thursday's (June 16) hour-long episode continued to focus on Marlon's recovery, as he started making progress with continued physio.

Marlon's biggest achievement thus far is that he was able to take his first step since having a stroke, with the help of a walking frame.

The day understandably took a lot out of Marlon, so he was completely unprepared for Rhona to make a romantic proposal after he woke up from a nap.

Rhona was stunned when an emotional Marlon rejected her proposal, telling her it felt more like pity than actual love.

"I can't be what you need," he told Rhona.

Marlon broke down because he didn't feel like the man he once was, telling Rhona that he couldn't take her "pushing" him into such a big decision.

"Sorry, I made a mistake," Rhona demured as she made a hasty exit.

Later, Marlon opened up to Paddy about why he'd turned down the proposal. He told Paddy: "She wouldn't be marrying me. She'd be marrying this."

Paddy reminded Marlon that Rhona stood by his side in the darkest days following his stroke when some other people would have "run a mile".

"Rhona is special, but you don't need me to tell you that, do you?" Paddy asked. "If you need someone in your corner, that's who you want."

With Paddy encouraging Marlon to give the proposal a second thought, he gave some serious thought to being the one to propose. What will Rhona say?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
