A married teacher has been charged over claims she had a sexual relationship with a pupil.

Katherine Ross Ridenhour, 23, who also worked as cheerleading coach, was arrested over an allegations of inappropriate contact with the 17-year-old boy.

She later resigned from her role as a science teacher at Cox Mill School in Concord, North Carolina, Fox News reported.

Concord Police Department said it received reports of an "inappropriate consensual relationship" between Ms Ridenhour and the pupil earlier this week.

The pair had engaged in “inappropriate contact” at the school several times in the past two months, detectives added.

Ms Ridenhour, who joined the school last August, was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student.

State law defines the charge as "willfully taking or attempting to take any immoral, improper, or indecent liberties with a student for the purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire".
