ITV has been rolling out trailers for its Martin Freeman-led drama A Confession for a few weeks now, and fans had been starting to wonder when they'd officially say anything about the release date other than the old coming soon.

Fortunately, those who are counting down the days until the Captain America: Civil War returns to the small screen don't have much longer as the broadcaster has now revealed that the show will premiere on Monday, September 2 at 9pm.

Freeman is set to star alongside the likes of Daniel Betts (The Crown), Faye McKeever (Trollied), Anna Wilson-Jones (Victoria), Ian Puleston-Davies (Tin Star) and Imelda Staunton in the six-part series.

Based on a true story, A Confession centres on Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who breached police protocol during a missing person's investigation back in 2011.

Sian O'Callaghan, a 22-year-old young woman, had gone on a night out and never returned home. Suspicion ultimately fell on the last person known to have seen her, taxi driver Christopher Halliwell, who had picked her up from a pub that evening.

While evidence seemed flimsy, Fulcher had Halliwell arrested when he saw the latter buying a large quantity of pills as he scoured over surveillance footage. But instead of taking him straight to Swindon station as expected, he ordered Halliwell to be taken for immediate questioning at Barbury Castle in Wiltshire.

After a four-hour long interrogation, Halliwell reportedly cracked and told Fulcher that he'd be willing to take him to O'Callaghan's body. Later, he confessed to killing 20-year-old sex worker Becky Godden, too.

Speaking about Fulcher's methods, Freeman previously told Digital Spy that he respects how he put his career and reputation on the line in the name of justice.

"My sympathy and my empathy is certainly with Steve Fulcher, let's put it that way, and not just because I've played him," the Sherlock star explained. "I don't know how anyone could say he did the wrong thing, morally."

A Confession airs on ITV on September 2 at 9pm.
