University open days can be daunting as there are so many things to consider when choosing a degree. Thankfully, Martin Lewis has revealed his top tips for making the most of them.

The finance expert took to social media today (Monday, September 16) to share four important questions to ask about costs, teaching, and accommodation. His number one question is to ask lecturers what their contact hours are.

He says it is important to check as some universities wheel certain staff out for open days that later turn out to have no face-to-face time with undergraduates. Potential students should ask about the real cost of living on campus.

English student maintenance loans have not kept up with inflation so it is important to check how much of your loan rent would take up. Martin Lewis also recommends double checking what specific degree well-known alumni studied as the truth is often stretched a little.

Finally, it is crucial to understand the course content and how that information is taught. For example, if it is a practical course then make sure you see the labs or studios and ask what you'll have access to.

He also urges soon-to-be students not to be scared of asking questions, saying: "This isn't school, it's a sales pitch. Speak to existing students on the course if you can, for an honest appraisal."
