A Money Saving Expert reader has managed to appear on both ITV Tipping Point and BBC Pointless - winning £10k in the process - thanks to Martin Lewis' team's tips. The quizzer and TV show guest spoke out to MSE after they helped him land the life-changing sum of cash.

The MSE reader Dan Farmer, a train driver from Hull, applied to appear on a number of programmes after reading the consumer group's tricks, tips and hacks. The 30-year-old won Tipping Point in an episode that aired in February 2022.

It came three years after his Pointless appearance, where he ended up empty-handed. He told MSE: "One day I was browsing the site and saw the blog about boosting your chances to get on a TV game show and just thought, 'why the hell not?', so I started applying for multiple shows.

"I remember reading the line which said, 'sending off application forms and having telephone interviews isn't that scary – because you are just talking about yourself'. It took away the fear for me because it was so simple; all you really have to do is be yourself and let your personality shine through – so that's what I did.

He added: "You watch game shows growing up but never think there's a chance of getting on one. But I followed MSE's tips and did; now I'm always sharing the site with friends and telling them to apply for shows, because you really have nothing to lose.

"I would honestly tell everyone to just give it a go, because you never know what might happen." The MSE tips included trying for lesser-known shows first, and selling yourself in the application. Don't forget to be enthusiastic, either, and remember to prepare before your appearance - or risk being caught out.
