Martin Lewis has issued a warning over the best date to buy Christmas vegetables at supermarkets. Martin had a warning on last week's ITV show, which was a pre Christmas special, as he warned over supermarets slashing prices for the festive season.

“Christmas veg, from 16 December, that’s when they really start to discount it to get you in-store to go and do your Christmas shopping if you haven’t done it," Mr Lewis said. He went on “For the last few years, supermarkets have been battling in a price-war over Christmas vegetables a few days before Christmas.

Aldi went first last year, reducing potatoes to 15p, and a range of Christmas veg (including swede, sprouts, parsnips, carrots and cabbage) to 19p in-store from 18 December. Tesco joined in a day later and customers could get various veg from 15p."

Mr Lewis added: "Sainsbury's had various veg reduced to 15p.” Lidl, meanwhile, had veg reduced to 18p. A Money Saving Expert forum user explained: "Lidl are starting on Monday 18th. 500g sprouts, carrots & parsnips, 300g shallots & whole swede 19p each.

"2Kg potatoes 15p." A second said: "Sainsbury's price matching all of them, aside from shallots which they only sell in 400g bags. They do have cabbage at 19p though, either white or red. Edit : not sure when they're starting, they're showing for my delivery on Tuesday."

"You'd think I'd be used to it but it's the same thing every year. The 'tins' of chocs appear from ...ooh... August, then suddenly it's Christmas next week. How does that work?" another said. "Just found this for Aldi- from Monday 18th Vegetables included in the festive deal are 1kg of carrots, 2kg of white potatoes 500g bag of parsnips. Also available as part of the offer will be Aldi’s red and white cabbages, 500g brussels sprouts swedes. The bags of white potatoes will be priced at 15p, while the other vegetables will be 19p each," another said.
