Watch: Martin Lewis says King Charles asked for a brief on energy crisis

Martin Lewis has revealed King Charles III requested a personal briefing from the money saving expert about the UK's consumer energy crisis.

The Good Morning Britain host and financial journalist was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours list for services to broadcasting and consumer rights, which he received from the then Prince Charles in July 2022 at Windsor Castle.

Lewis told viewers on the ITV breakfast show: "He said to me 'I hear you were doing wonderful work for people during the pandemic.'

"I said 'It feels we have moved on from that now, Sir, we are now in a cost of living crisis and I am incredibly worried about the difficulties this winter.'

"And we spoke for a minute and just before I went he said, 'If you wouldn’t mind, would you provide me with a briefing note on exactly what’s happening?'

"I wrote that note, I sent it and I heard later it went around not just the now King but also his son and other members of the royal household. So, they are trying to keep informed of what is going on with the population."

Co-host Susanna Reid added: "To be clear, this is not a briefing note he wanted for his royal household? This was a briefing note he wanted so he understood what was happening."

Lewis replied: "[So he understood] the consumer energy crisis."

King Charles was officially proclaimed the UK Head Of State on Saturday 10 September, following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II two days earlier, at the age of 96.

The government has since confirmed an energy price cap of £2,500 a year per household in a bid to combat the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Lewis, 50, rose to fame after founding the website MoneySavingExpert.com in 2003 and is a regular guest commentator on ITV's This Morning and GMB.
