Martin Lewis has warned four questions people under the age of 18 need to ask themselves in September. The BBC Sounds and ITV star spoke out over the need to ask questions when attending university open days before putting in an application.

Money Saving Expert founder Mr Lewis said: "Many are heading off to University Open Days at the moment here's a few starters on costs , marketing and more (feel free to add yours)..." Mr Lewis urged people to ask "what are your contact hours with undergraduates?" when meeting professors.

Martin also encouraged people to ask about accmmodation costs, well-known alumni, and "what's actually taught and how its taught." Mr Lewis said: " If it's a practical course make sure you see the labs and the studios and ask what access you'll have.

"Overall, don't be afraid to ask questions. This isn't school, it's a sales pitch. Speak to existing students on the course if you can, for an honest appraisal." In response, a MSE fan said: "Access to medical care is really important to us - our daughter is living with CFS so finding a uni with onsite GP etc & welfare support is really important. Friend’s daughter with similar dx has had much better care at L’Boro Uni than at home."

"I was looking at Oxford Colleges for my daughter and was stunned at how much cheaper some of them were compared to other university halls. I had never realised the extent to which they are subsidised by donors etc," a second wrote.

Another said: "Would add to this that it is worth looking at alternatives. For example, qualify as a lawyer through CILEX. Many law firms will employ you while you study (and are gaining practical experience), some will pay your fees and you have control over your route to full qualification."

"Good questions, Martin! As a retired lecturer who taught and led undergrad and postgrad practical programmes for 30 years, I would try to answer all those in our literature, website, or in person on the day, plus: these are our job stats in that occupation," another wrote.
