Martin Lewis has issued a five-day warning for energy customers to "lock in" with EDF. The BBC Sounds podcast host has urged British Gas, EON, Ovo and Octopus customers to consider "locking in" at the cheapest fixed deal on the market right now.

Mr Lewis has said the 10 per cent price cap hike on October 1 can be mitigated with the EDF one-year dix. According to EDF, the plan is £149 cheaper than the upcoming price cap. The energy company said: “From 1 July to 30 September 2024 the energy price cap is £1,568 a year. The energy price cap is increasing to £1,717 a year for the period between 1 October and 31 December 2024.

"Our EDF Essentials 1Yr Oct25 fixed tariff has a typical bill price of £1,568 a year – £149 cheaper than the Ofgem cap between 1 October to 31 December 2024. The 'typical' bill price of the Ofgem price cap assumes no changes in price over a full year. In reality, the price cap changes every three months.”

Mr Lewis said: "Stop press. New cheapest 1yr energy fix STOPS next week's 10% energy price rise. EDF's just launched its Essentials Fixed Oct25 1yr fix* for new & existing customers, locking in the current Price Cap in every region for a year. As the Price Cap will rise next Tue (1 Oct) by 10%, this means an almost immediate saving.

"Always compare: Exact costs depend on location and usage, so do an Energy Club comparison which'll also show other fixes including a new one from Octopus. Important: For most it'll show no saving as it's against today's Price Cap, but the real saving comes after 1 Oct."

Ofgem's new energy price cap will come into force from October 1 until December 31, New Year's Eve.
