New Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation, which stars Marvel's Lee Pace (aka Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy), is set to return for a second season.

Based on Isaac Asimov's seminal book series, the show made its debut last month on the streaming platform, counting the likes of Chernobyl's Jared Harris, Voyagers' Lou Llobell and Harry Potter's Alfred Enoch among its cast.

Foundation has now been confirmed for season two, with showrunner and executive producer David S Goyer saying (via TVLine): "Since my childhood I've dreamed of how Hari Seldon and Eto Demerzel would look and sound – what Terminus and Trantor would feel like.

"Now, with season two, our audience will get to visit more of Asimov's indelible characters and worlds, including Hober Mallow, General Bel Riose, and all the Outer Suns.

"I'm thrilled that a whole new generation of fans are reading Asimov's brilliant masterwork. We're playing the long game with Foundation and I'm grateful to my partners at Apple and Skydance for entrusting me with this epic. Buckle up. We're about to fold some serious space."

Foundation focuses on efforts to save civilisation after Dr Hari Seldon (Harris) predicts the downfall of the Galactic Empire. As such, a band of followers venture to the far reaches of the galaxy to create The Foundation, which aims to rebuild and preserve civilisation.

However, the ruling emperor clones the Cleons fear their rule may be weakening as they reckon with potentially losing their powerful legacy.

The series also stars Leah Harvey, Reece Shearsmith (Inside No 9), Laura Birn (The Innocents), Terrence Mann (Sense8), Clarke Peters (The Wire) and Cassian Bilton.

Foundation season one is streaming weekly on Apple TV+.
