Marvel fans are hoping that new film Black Widow will clear up one question left unanswered by Captain America: Civil War.

The next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be a prequel set following the events of the 2016 blockbuster, which means the mystery might just be about to get solved.

In the opening scene of Civil War, we see the Avengers uniting to prevent the villainous Crossbones (Frank Grillo) from acquiring a nerve agent from the Institute of infectious Diseases in Nigeria.

To avoid capture, Crossbones activiates a suicide vest, which is the event that inspires the United Nations’ decision to pass the Sokovia Accords. But what isn’t known is who exactly hired Crossbones.

Eagle-eyed Marvel viewers think this answer will be provided in Black Widow thanks to two small moments from the film’s trailer. Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) can be seen holding some vials, which suggests the film’s villain Taskmaster might be after similar agents to Crossbones.

Natasha can also be seen in a scientific facility, which ScreenRant believes could be the base of Crossbones’ and potentially Taskmaster’s employers.

Intriguingly, Marvel is keeping a lid on the identity of the actor who plays taskmaster in Black Widow.

Although Crossbones’ employers might not be a part of the film, it would certainly be a good opportunity for the MCU to tie up one of its loose ends.

Black Widow will be released in cinemas on 1 May.
