Marvel has some very strange villains on its roster. We've already met a few of them – big old purple Thanos, and the giant, flaming-headed Dormammu. Others are still waiting in the wings: Morgan le Fay, the sorceress of Arthurian legend, the purple shorts-wearing dragon Fin Fang Foom, and the time-travelling despot Kang the Conqueror (who also happens to be another time-travelling despot, Immortus, in his downtime).

Then there's Annihilus, a giant insect from the antimatter Negative Zone.

Using his 'Cosmic Control Rod', he rules over a horde of ravenous monster bugs who are eternally gagging to spill into our universe and devour it. There has been a slow but steady flow of rumours that he would appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years – including the (incorrect) speculation that 'Avengers 4' would be subtitled 'Annihilation' after the comics storyline that saw Annihilus come close to conquering the Marvel Universe.

Now a recent promo website created by Marvel has fans speculating about the arrival of the big green tyrant once again.

The retro website for the '90s-set Captain Marvel began with a link "https://i.annihil.us/" (although it updates to www.marvel.com in the browser). Could this be a clue that Annihilus is waiting in the wings – perhaps to step forward as a greater threat than Thanos in Avengers: Endgame?

Fans are probably jumping the gun on that one to be honest. 'i.annihil.us' is frequently used on the Marvel website for image URLs, and Marvel Studios isn't usually one to hide big reveals like that in weird places as far as we or anyone else have ever noticed.

However, even without any direct clue, the likelihood that Annihilus will be showing up in the MCU is about to increase hugely. That's thanks to the imminent Disney/Fox merger, which will bring the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters back under Marvel's roof. As Annihilus debuted in Fantastic Four, his film rights are widely believed to be held by Fox.

If that is the case, the fact that the Fox deal hasn't been finalised makes it unlikely that Annihilus was included in Endgame. But once the papers are signed, we'll be one step closer to seeing that wonderful scene where Spider-Man finds the villain on his toilet recreated on the big screen.

Avengers: Endgame will be released on April 25 in the UK and on April 26 in the US.
