Marvel’s Luke Cage renewed for Season 2

Earlier today, Marvel’s official Luke Cage twitter account confirmed that the popular Netflix show would be receiving a second season.

Not much is known about the series at present; a few things can be assumed, however. Primarily that most of the core cast will return - Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Simone Missick as Misty Knight (who will also be appearing in The Defenders), and Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard can presumably all be expected to return.

The series’ airdate is a more complicated affair, however. It’s already been confirmed that Jessica Jones season 2 will be the first Netflix series to air following The Defenders; it’s set to be broadcast in early 2018. With both Daredevil season 3 and a Punisher miniseries to fit into the schedule, it appears that we won’t see Luke Cage season 2 until at least 2019. Of course, this does remain speculation, so it’s entirely possible that Luke Cage may have an earlier airdate than expected.

One thing this news does appear to confirm, interestingly, is that we won’t see the Iron Fist and Luke Cage characters come together for a single Heroes for Hire miniseries in place of second seasons for their respective programs, as some had speculated. On balance, this is likely a good thing, as it’ll allow each character room to breathe, as well as letting each show maintain their own tone; the distinctive style and tone of Luke Cage was one of its greatest attributes, and it’d be a shame to see it compromised.

Hopefully, Luke Cage season two can reach the same heights of the first season, while at the same time striving to improve upon its mistake.
