Mary Berry has revealed she turned down her husband the first time he asked her to marry him because he was drunk.
Looking back on photos of their wedding day in the latest episode of her BBC series Mary Berry Everyday, Berry and her husband Paul Hunnings recalled how it had taken three attempts for her to agree to marry him.
Asked if she remembered when he first proposed, she responded: "I do remember the first proposal and I think you were drunk."
He said: "Well I might have been. It's a big step. You don't go into something like that without a bit of fortification."
Berry, 82, said: "I think you had too much and I can remember telling you you were drunk and thinking, 'I'm not going to have anything to do with this man'. But you did come back."
On the second occasion, Mr Hunnings said she had responded in the same way.
"Third time I think I said from memory, 'I can't go on like this'," he said. "I said, 'I'm getting on in age, so either it's yes or no'."
It was then that she agreed to take his hand, and they went on to tie the knot in 1966 at Charlcombe Church near her parents' home in Bath.
The latest episode of Berry's series saw her create a series of showstoppers to mark their 50th wedding anniversary.
As they flicked through their wedding album over a pot of tea, Berry revealed her dress had been bought in the sale for just £5.

Berry, who baked her wedding cake herself, said she had no regrets over her marriage.
"I'm very happy and it was for better for worse for richer for poorer and we've had some wonderful times," she said.
