Mary Berry has spoken. Avocados are wasted being smashed up on toast, when they'd taste so much better being served in a delicious prawn cocktail instead.

"It's very fashionable now to prepare avocado on toast. I can remember when we didn't have them at all – now they're everywhere," the former Bake Off judge told Radio Times.

"But this isn't one of the nicest things to do with them. Better to add them to a prawn cocktail or to a little plate of smoked salmon or shrimps.

Mary insisted that the delicious and simple-to-make starter is making a comeback, after previously being scoffed and sneered at.

"Do it in a glass, with a little gem lettuce leaf," the food writer suggested. "People used to laugh at prawn cocktail because it felt dated, but it's coming back."

Mary also remarked that the rise in dietary requirements and food intolerances has made a "big difference" in the way dinner parties are now hosted.

"The big difference today is that we have to ask about allergies," she ruminated. "That never used to happen. You just cooked whatever you wanted to. You have to respect that people need different meals now."

And while the way Mary cooks may have evolved, she would never resort to 'gimmicky' ways of presenting food, which have been adopted by some restaurants and cafes.

Think a full English breakfast in a jar

"The way I cook might have changed, but I present my food like I used to. Serving food on slate tiles?

"Oh, no, that's all very gimmicky. And I don't like a plate zig-zagged with sauce, or in little blobs in circles," she added.

Thank goodness for Mary for telling us like it is…
