A gunman has been caught after a shooting in Maryland that left three people dead and two fighting for life.

Police were hunting the "armed and dangerous" man after the incident just before 9am local time at a business park 30 miles from Baltimore.

Schools and businesses in the area around Emmorton Business Park in Edgewood, as well as the set of Netflix series House of Cards, were placed on lockdown.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said police were looking for a 37-year-old suspect, Radee Labeeb Prince.

Prince is also suspected of later shooting a man at a second-hand car dealership 50 miles away in Wilmington, Delaware.

The man was shot three times and rushed to hospital, according to local reports.

The two people injured in the first shooting are said to be in a critical condition and were rushed to Baltimore's Shock Trauma Center, part of the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Following the shooting, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said "the killer remains on the loose", adding that the two critically injured victims had been shot in the head.

The owner of a home improvement company based at the business park said the victims and the suspect all worked for him at the same company, Advanced Granite Solutions.

Barak Caba said the suspect has been an employee for four months, working as a machine operator.

He was thought to have sped away from the scene in a 2000 black Acadia with a Delaware licence plate.

Investigators are treating the first shooting as a workplace violence incident, according to Dave Fitz, a spokesman for the Baltimore FBI field office, which is assisting local police.

Prince was eventually detained in Delaware after almost 12 hours.
