Jonathan Ross came 'agonisingly' close to rumbling the star inside the Pufferfish costume on The Masked Singer, only to make a huge identity blunder on Saturday night's show.

Viewed as a dead cert for the ITV final by fans, Pufferfish was the first act in action this weekend, as a double elimination loomed, opening the programme with a fantastic performance of Don't Rain on My Parade. Very much switched onto the clues, Jonathan clocked a photo of Coronation Street legend Gail Platt in Pufferfish's latest Masked Singer VT and used it to link it to one of the hit soap's current stars, Jodie Prenger.

Before landing a job on Corrie, Jodie first shot to TV fame as a contestant on BBC talent search I'd Do Anything, as Andrew Lloyd Webber searched for the Nancy for his West End revival of Oliver. Jodie ended up winning the show in 2008, but it is the performer who finished in third place, Samantha Barks and not her, who a growing number of viewers are sure is Pufferfish.

A huge clue to Samantha being Pufferfish came via the appearance of the French flag in the teaser video, a big nod to her role in the film adaptation of Les Miserables. But, going for Jodie with a lot of conviction and guessing the wrong I'd Do Anything star, Jonathan commented: "Do you remember the TV show I'd Do Anything, where they were trying to find a new Nancy for Oliver? The person who won that has also been in Coronation Street and you saw a picture of Gail from Coronation Street.

"I've heard her sing live and she's amazing. I think it might be Jodie Prenger," as members of the audience seemed to greet his guess with some enthusiasm.

While the French flag 'sealed the deal' for many fans that Samantha is Pufferfish, it was her song choice from a week earlier that was confirmation for others, with her performance of Teddy Swims' Lose Control, seeing people link the track's title to Samantha's role as Elsa in Frozen and its famous song Let It Go.
