Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood are to be left out of Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad as further punishment for inviting women to the team hotel in Iceland.

Southgate names his party for the triple-header against Wales, Denmark and Belgium on Thursday. The England manager had not spoken to the pair as of Tuesday morning, although he could make contact ahead of the announcement to explain his decision. It will not, however, take too much explanation, given Foden and Greenwood were sent straight home from Iceland for breaking coronavirus rules and also fined £1,300 by Icelandic police.

Southgate later revealed he would have axed the pair from his squad, regardless of Covid regulations, after finding out the full details of the incident.

Despite revealing Foden and Greenwood would have to win back his trust, Southgate did not confirm whether he would consider them for selection for the October games. But it is understood he is planning to leave them out and make it clear that such rule breaking will not be tolerated, regardless of the fact Foden has started the season encouragingly at Manchester City.

Southgate has been forced to deal with plenty of off-the-pitch distractions in recent months, following Raheem Sterling’s attack on team-mate Joe Gomez, James Maddison’s visit to a casino after being released from England duty, and players breaking coronavirus regulations.

Foden’s anticipated absence could free up space for Maddison to come straight back into Southgate’s squad, while the absence of Manchester United’s Greenwood could be good news for in-form Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

England play Wales in a friendly and face Belgium and Denmark in the Nations League.

Jack Grealish is hoping his good start to the season with Aston Villa will win him a place in the initial squad having had to rely on the withdrawal of Marcus Rashford last time.

Greenwood and Foden met up with 20-year-old model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir and her 19-year-old cousin, Lara Clausen, in the Radisson Saga Hotel in Reykjavik, where England were staying in Iceland.

Icelandic reports claimed separate bedrooms, outside England’s bubble, had been booked and used for the get-together. It is understood England players were staying on the third floor of the hotel and the meeting took place on level seven.

Both players issued grovelling public apologies after being sent home in disgrace, but Southgate was still angry about the incident following the game against Denmark, which they both missed.

Southgate said: “They know what has happened was unacceptable, both on a Covid level and regardless of Covid. Either way, they would have gone home.

“I don’t understand how the players could have felt that was acceptable. It’s a puzzle to me. There was a Covid breach and 100 per cent we had to act quickly and we did that.

“But what emerged since has made it clear that, Covid or not, we would have been sending the players home anyway. So everybody else needs to understand that that’s not going to be tolerated within an England camp.

“I’ve got a lot to think about. Trust needs to be rebuilt and that takes time. There has to be consequences.”
