Wood Green explosion: 'Massive' blast in north London street as caravan burns down in ‘seconds’

A caravan “exploded” in north London this morning, with firefighters rushing to tackle the ensuing blaze.

Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters raced to the scene Selborne Road, Wood Green, but were unable to salvage the vehicle which was consumed by flames almost instantly.

The London Fire Brigade issued a statement shortly after the incident confirming “the caravan was destroyed by the blaze” and that “the cause of the fire is not yet known.”

It added: “Two other motor vehicles, a fence and a street lamp were also damaged. There were no reports of any injuries.

“The Brigade was called at 11.31. Crews from Hornsey, Tottenham and Holloway Fire Stations attended the incident.”

Residents have described the impact of the blast, with one saying it “shook the whole house”.

Another witness called it a “massive explosion”, saying the “caravan went in a second”.

“Police Ambulance and Fire Brigade everywhere roads closed. Avoid,” the person tweeted alongside a video of the smouldering wreckage.

One local mother said the caravan had been “parked there a couple of weeks” and it appeared to be someone’s home.

Cara Howard wrote on Twitter: “It was in a pretty bad way but looked like people were living in it.”

Ms Howard, who posted a picture of the caravan before the accident, told the Standard she had previously reported the run-down vehicle to the council.

She added that she had been informed of the fire because her daughter “attends the nursery very close by”.

“All the staff and children are fine,” she added. “Just staying inside because of the smoke and fumes.”

The Fire Brigade confirmed it would be investigating.
