'Massive explosion' shakes North Wales town and leaves people petrified
Buildings shook and people ran out onto streets following a “massive explosion” on Anglesey this morning (Monday, November 18). The emergency services descended on Holyhead as residents were left mystified as to the cause of the blast.
The explosion was reported to have centred on the port’s London Road industrial estate just after 9am. On social media, one man said his whole workplace shook, adding: “Everyone in the factory and the neighbouring factory came out wondering what the hell it was. The birds here went mad.”
People still in bed heard the noise or felt the vibrations. The explosion alarmed school-run mums and a potential house-buyer was left wondering if Holyhead was the right place for him.

Shoppers in the nearby Asda store heard the bang and local residents felt a tremor rumble through their homes. “I literally felt it, quite scary,” said one woman online. Another added: “I’m in Kingsland and my whole house shook!” In the aftermath, helicopters were reported to be circling overhead “doing checks”.
Equally, many Holyhead residents were left wondering what the fuss was all about. Scores of people took to social media to say they did not hear or feel anything. In the absence of obvious flames or smoke, the source of the explosion remained a mystery too.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) has since confirmed that a “small explosion” occurred and suggested it was in a shipping container. A spokesperson said no one was hurt. The North Wales Live Whatsapp community for top stories and breaking news is live now - here’s how to sign up
They added: “We were called to reports of an explosion in the area at 9.19am this morning. Crews carried out a full investigation of the area.
“The small explosion caused heat damage to a forklift truck within a shipping container. No equipment was used and there were no casualties.”
The site of the explosion was reported to be close to the port and railway station. However the fire service has not confirmed the location. North Wales Police did not attend the incident. Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter - sent every Friday
